Description

NAED a nonprofit trade association is searching for a St Louis, MO area Controller. The Controller is responsible for preserving and enhancing the assets of the association, recommending financial policies & procedures, promoting the use of data driven decisions, and managing accounting & administration responsibilities, including overseeing financial statements and budget presentations.

Reports to the CEO & President Direct reports: Accounting Manager & Accountant.

Specific Requirements:

  • Oversee the accounting department to ensure proper maintenance and function of all accounting systems.
  • Understand business goals to develop strategies and plans that are directly driven by the strategic goals of the association.
  • Develop and present annual operating budget for Board approval. Operate within an approved budget.
  • Analyze financial results and prepare and maintain regular financial planning reports including internal monthly and quarterly financial statements and a dashboard comparing financial performance against the budget.
  • Maximize the utilization of assets of NAED through effective management of receivables and purchases.
  • Remain updated on nonprofit audit best practices, state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations.
  • Oversee coordination of the annual financial statement audit and manage relationship with the independent audit firm, including negotiating fees and services.
  • Coordinate audits and ensure proper filing of federal and state tax returns and other governmental reports.
  • Analyze and approve the purchase of all major capital expenditures.
  • Provide appropriate support to committees to enable them to properly perform their functions. Ensure committee decisions and recommendations are within approved budgets.
  • Provide the NAED Board of Directors, Foundation Board of Directors, and committees with updated budgets and other reports as requested.
  • Trustee of the 401K program, including submitting government reports, complying with regulations, and managing the financial advisors.
  • Review all month-end closing activities and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Oversee cash management (accounts receivable / accounts payable), including approving weekly payables, coordinating check signing and providing support to collection activities.
  • Develop and implement accounting procedures and policies. Implement cash management policies.
  • Act as a thought leader and a key contributor providing leadership to direct reports for both project implementation and personal development.
  • Establish basic cost accounting to help identify the cost of providing the company's products and services.
  • Manage the company's real estate affairs consisting of leases and subleases with various property management; negotiate new leases or lease renewals in coordination with general counsel.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned.
  • Some travel required.

Qualifications:

  • Certified Public Accountant license with 2years minimum experience working in public accounting, preferably auditing nonprofit organizations.
  • Additional 3 year minimum working in-house for a company, preferably in a nonprofit organization, after public accounting.
  • Highly proficient with technology and software (Microsoft Office, accounting software, payroll, data entry, etc.
  • Demonstrated a minimum of 5 years in a people management role, with leadership and motivational skills.
  • Ability to quickly establish credibility both internal and externally as a professional whose experience and knowledge can be depended upon to produce sound advice and well documented decisions.
  • Creative problem solver with superior critical thinking skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to manage, motivate and develop staff members.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills are key to this position.
