English Language Arts Specialist (ELA)
The ELA Specialist is responsible for creating an infectious, inspiring learning community in their classroom.  The ELA Specialist models the Learner Profile and inquiry practice in their instruction and informal interactions with students.   The ELA Specialist is ultimately responsible for assuring the content specific academic excellence of students. The ELA Specialist is also responsible for collaborative planning with their classroom team, horizontal planning with their grade team and vertical planning.  

Instructional Expectations:
Planning and Delivery

  • Plan and deliver instruction in accordance with MYP scope and sequence and appropriate to grade level(s), abilities and cultural background of his/her students
  • Create an atmosphere through personal example and efficacious relationships with students, which inspire intellectual growth and an enthusiasm for learning
  • Create and organize classroom rules, procedures, and routines
  • Manage student behavior to ensure student learning
  • Establish a culture of high expectations, diversity, cultural sensitivity and understanding
  • Establish clear content and language objectives for all lessons, units, and projects
  • Provide instruction to special needs students and work in conjunction with the Special Education Consultant to ensure that IEP student goals are being met
  • Provide differentiated instruction as needed


  • Maintain an ongoing communication with grade team, students and parents about the students' level of instruction, academic progress and/or deficiencies
  • Monitor and evaluate student progress regularly in relation to learning objectives.
  • Track information and maintain accurate student records
  • Analyze qualitative and quantitative student data; use this data to drive instruction and to differentiate instruction
  • Administer standardized assessment, school-selected assessments in accordance with the school
  • Plan, implement, monitor and assess a classroom instructional program consistent with the State Standards, Middle Years Program framework and the Mission of the school

Minimum Requirements:
BA/BS in Education

  • Eligible for Missouri teacher certification in intended discipline, K-8, 
  • 2 years experience teaching in an urban setting
  • Excellent speaking, reading, writing and math skills in English
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills in English
  • Able to deliver native-level instruction in at least two of our instructional languages: English, French, or Spanish
  • Clear Criminal Background/Fingerprint Clearance
  • Valid TB Clearance by first day of employment
  • Computer skills proficiency in Word, Excel, Power Point and others as necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • Second certification or endorsement
  • Demonstrate knowledge of curriculum development
  • Graduate Studies or advanced teaching certification (National Board of Professional Teaching Standards)
