Teaching Assistant

We're looking for a self-motivated Teaching Assistant to help us expand tech greatness in the St. Louis, MO area.

LaunchCode Teaching Assistants (TAs) guide a group of students as their project manager and support point of contact throughout the LaunchCode LiftOff program while simultaneously refining their professional development goals. The team leadership experience will allow you to grow your leadership, people management, and group facilitation skills.

Fellows serve as a team lead in LaunchCode's core career-readiness program, which is eight weeks long. You will assist our LaunchCode part-time web-development graduates as they create their first full-stack web development group project that they will demo for potential Hiring Managers. TAs have an excellent opportunity to work towards your defined career development objectives, especially those focused on project management.

This role reports to the LaunchCode Candidate Engagement Manager.

Essential Functions

  • Mentor learners throughout the project planning process (Outlines, Wireframing, User Stories, etc)
  • Encourages team throughout challenges to accomplish their goals
  • Facilitate stand-up meetings with your team to ensure communication and timely progress.
  • Communicate & coordinate with the CEM regarding learner's progress both individually and as a team as well as possible concerns
  • Grade and review assignments on time
  • Provide feedback and input to learners regarding own careers and experiences
  • Facilitate career modules with students to assess their job readiness

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of full stack web programming concepts
  • Strong, effective-communication skills - comfortable leading a group of 5 to 6 learners
  • 6+ months working professonally as a Software Developer or other programming-focused role
  • Perception/patience (knowing when a student needs help and guiding them in how to problem solve to find answers)
  • Impressive conflict-management skills - conflict is a normal part of a team's existence and can signify healthy team interactions. Knowing how to approach it is essential for this role.
  • Strong leadership and initiative skills- learners will be looking towards you for guidance on their project, need to be able to pinpoint problems fast
  • Familiarity with Software Methodologies (Agile, Waterfall, Scrum, etc)
  • Skilled/adept in Git and Github - merge conflicts are bound to happen with new devs!
  • Empathy- our learners are coming from all walks of life and need TAs who are understanding, kind, and encouraging, yet know how to hold their team accountable

Position Type

Independent Contractor - work approximately 10 hours per week; compensation is $15/hour. Teaching Assistants are not eligible for employee benefits through LaunchCode. The class meets Mondays and Thursdays from 5:30 pm-8:30 pm (CST). The class is in person and meets from June 22, 2023 - August 24, 2023 in person at LaunchCode HQ at 4811 Delmar Bvld, St. Louis MO.
