Delta Dental of Missouri is seeking an Underwriter in St. Louis, Missouri. The Underwriter analyzes and uses independent judgement to evaluate group experience in order to calculate rates for prospective and enrolled accounts that are experience rated for both dental and vision. This position evaluates commercial dental programs to make comparisons with DDMO benefit structure. The Underwriter also creates all benefit booklets (Summary Plan Descriptions) for distribution to participants.


Responsibilities

• Analyzes and uses judgement in evaluating group experience of prospective and enrolled accounts that are experience rated to determine appropriate rates for both dental and vision. Verifies validity of data received and requests additional information as needed. Calculates rates based on prescribed formulas and guidelines, judgmental decisions, and according to group specifications.

• Strategically develops rates for prospective accounts according to prescribed formulas and guidelines while making independent judgmental decisions for experience rated cases based on competitive data and group specifics.

• Develops renewal rates for all experience rated dental and vision accounts typically over 125 employees in size. Collects and analyzes data while making independent judgmental decisions to accurately prepare renewal calculations. Responsible for coordinating the renewals with the designated management team as well as account management and releasing a final renewal exhibit to appropriate departments in a timely fashion.

• Develops rates for program changes as requested for current and prospective client partners ensuring timely responses to meet customer needs.

• Evaluates commercial dental programs and makes comparisons with DDMO benefit structure for use in determining the benefits DDMO will offer.

• Creates benefit booklets issued to DDMO participants. Customizes benefit booklets as needed to reflect program designs based on group specifications.

• Maintains confidentiality and trade secrets. Protects the data we receive from a breach or disclosure of PHI.

Other Responsibilities

• Assists Underwriting Representative with daily duties during busy periods and in their absence.

• Communicate details regarding unique features on each large account to the Underwriting Rep during the enrollment process to ensure a smooth transition to DDMO.

• Consult and support all departments regarding underwriting related questions. Daily contact with Marketing requiring discussion, explanation, and judgment to avoid misinterpretation of company policies.

• Manage the entire renewal cycle for assigned book of business which includes interfacing with account management and management.

• Professionally represent DDMO at conferences, and broker/client partner meetings.

• Performs other work-related duties as assigned.

• Daily communication with many DDMO departments with respect to proposals and underwriting topics. Occasional communication with client partners, brokers, and consultants regarding Schedule A's, Schedule C's, or various underwriting topics.


Accountabilities

• Accountable for the accuracy of all functions performed. Errors have a direct impact on the Company's bottom line and are not a one-time impact. Rate calculation errors impact each participant in the program for a minimum of 12 months. Incorrect benefit booklets result in additional payments.

• Meet short turn-around times when required.

• Excellent attention to detail and deadlines, good organizational skills, and a high level of initiative to ensure accuracy and timeliness of customer requests. Must be able to work with tight deadlines. Accountable for ensuring that groups accepted for enrollment meet the Underwriting guidelines established and that all information is verified for accuracy. Accountable for accepting or rejecting of new business in the absence of the Underwriting Rep.

• Strong understanding and application of Underwriting regulations and company policies to minimize Delta Dental's risk.

• Ability to make sound Underwriting decisions based on program availability and group size.

• Thorough understanding of various DDMO benefit structures and company policies regarding benefit interpretation.


Education, Skills, Personal Attributes, and Experience Required

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent years of experience, solid mathematical background.

• Minimum 3 years of experience in underwriting or health insurance industry required; dental underwriting experience is preferred.

• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with other team members and communicate clearly and accurately with internal and external customers with a high degree of professionalism.

• Strong oral, written, analytical, and interpersonal skills. Frequent communication required with internal customers and occasionally with external customers.

• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Access, and Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat. Proficient in use of office equipment such as PC, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Extensive knowledge of GRS (Group Rating System) and CMS (Contract Management System) for contract generation.

• Attentive to detail, accuracy and deadlines, good organizational skills, and high level of initiative. Ability to prioritize and must be able to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment while working with a variety of team members to achieve department and corporate goals. Excellent problem-solving skills and a logical approach to work.

• Strong understanding of system benefit plan module, and employer module is preferred.

• Strong understanding of finance, group accounts, CQI, and the benefit set-up within our claims administration software.

• Working knowledge of all departments within Delta Dental.

• Ability to remain poised and composed, yet firm, when dealing with dissatisfied DDMO team members.

• Understanding of dental terminology and procedures.

• Willing to travel for meetings with other DDMO offices as well as outside training and development programs, where appropriate.

• Ability to absorb technical information and apply it.

• Confident decision-making skills with sound judgement.

• Negotiation skills and the ability to influence others.

Work Conditions

• General office working conditions which may require sitting for extended periods of time

• Infrequent overnight travel may be required
